Planting Instructions for Collard Greens Seeds
- Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-drained, fertile soil.
- When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Collard Greens seeds outdoors 3–4 weeks before the last spring frost, or 6–8 weeks before the first fall frost for a fall crop. Collards grow best in cool weather.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil and amend with compost or aged manure. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.5.
- Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep.
- Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart in rows 18–24 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 12–18 inches apart when they are 4–5 inches tall.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Water at the base of the plant to prevent disease.
- Care: Mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Fertilize every 4–6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer if needed.
- Harvest: Begin harvesting outer leaves when they are large enough to eat (about 8–10 inches long), or harvest the whole plant. Collard greens taste sweeter after a light frost.
