Planting Instructions for European Columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris) Seeds
- Location: Choose a spot with partial shade to full sun and well-drained soil. Prefers some afternoon shade in hot climates.
- When to Plant:
- Outdoors: Sow Todd’s Seeds European Columbine seeds directly in late spring to early summer or fall.
- Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil and amend with compost if needed. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.0.
- Cold Stratification (Optional for Best Results): Refrigerate seeds in a damp paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag for 3–4 weeks before planting to improve germination.
- Sowing Depth: Sow seeds on the surface and press lightly—do not cover, as they need light to germinate.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 12–18 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (21–30 days). Once established, water moderately.
- Care: Deadhead to prolong blooming and prevent self-seeding if not desired. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer. European Columbine produces distinctive nodding flowers in various colors and may self-seed for naturalized growth.
