Planting Instructions for Foxglove Seeds
- Location: Choose a site with partial shade to full sun (in cooler climates) and moist, well-drained soil. Avoid overly dry or soggy areas.
- When to Plant:
- Indoors: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Sow Todd’s Seeds Foxglove seeds directly in late spring to early summer, or in fall in mild climates.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil and amend with compost. Ideal soil pH is 5.5–7.0.
- Sowing Depth: Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and press lightly—do not cover, as light is needed for germination.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 12–18 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during germination (14–21 days). Once established, water regularly, especially in dry periods.
- Care: Mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage new blooms or allow them to go to seed for self-sowing.
- Bloom Time: Typically blooms in the second year (biennial), with tall spikes of tubular flowers from late spring to early summer. Some varieties may bloom the first year if started early indoors.
Note: Foxglove (Digitalis) is toxic if ingested. Handle with care and keep away from pets and children.
