Planting Instructions for Gourd Seeds (All Types)
- Location: Choose a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil. Gourds need plenty of space and warmth.
- When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Gourd Seeds directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature is at least 70°F. In cooler climates, start indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost and transplant carefully.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil to a depth of 8–12 inches. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure. Ideal pH is 6.0–6.8.
- Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1 inch deep.
- Spacing:
- Bush types: 18–24 inches apart in rows, 3 feet apart.
- Vining types: 36–48 inches apart or 3–4 seeds per hill, spaced 5–6 feet apart.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy, especially during flowering and fruit development.
- Support: For vining types, provide a strong trellis or allow to sprawl on the ground.
- Care: Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer when vines begin to run.
- Harvest: Harvest when the gourds are fully mature, with hard shells and dried stems—typically 90–130 days after planting, depending on variety. Cure by drying in a warm, well-ventilated area for several weeks.
