Planting Instructions for Kale Seeds
- Location: Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil.
- When to Plant:
- Spring Crop: Sow Todd’s Seeds Kale seeds 4–6 weeks before the last frost.
- Fall Crop: Sow in late summer, 6–8 weeks before the first expected frost for best flavor.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost or aged manure. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.5.
- Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep.
- Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart in rows 18–24 inches apart. Thin or transplant seedlings to 12–18 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (5–10 days) and throughout the growing season.
- Care: Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer if growth slows.
- Harvest: Begin harvesting leaves when they are about the size of your hand. Pick outer leaves first, allowing the center to continue producing. Kale gets sweeter after a light frost.
