Planting Instructions for Leek Seeds
- Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-drained, fertile soil.
- When to Plant:
- Indoors: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last frost date.
- Outdoors: Transplant seedlings 1–2 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow in early spring when the soil can be worked.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil to 8–10 inches deep and enrich with compost or aged manure. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.0.
- Sowing Depth: Sow Todd’s Seeds Leeks seeds 1/4 inch deep indoors or outdoors.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 4–6 inches apart in rows 12–18 inches apart. For longer white shanks, transplant seedlings into 4–6 inch deep trenches and gradually fill in as they grow.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season.
- Care: Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Hill soil or mulch up around stems periodically to blanch the stalks.
- Harvest: Harvest when leeks are at least 1 inch in diameter—usually 90–120 days after transplanting. Pull gently or loosen soil around the base before lifting.
