How to Plant Lettuce, Romaine from Seeds

Planting Instructions for Romaine Lettuce Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil. Romaine prefers cool temperatures.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Spring Crop: Sow Todd’s Seeds Lettuce Romaine seeds 2–4 weeks before the last expected frost.
    • Fall Crop: Sow 6–8 weeks before the first expected frost. Sow every 2–3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and enrich with compost or aged manure. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.0.
  4. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly cover with soil.
  5. Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 8–12 inches apart once established.
  6. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during germination (7–14 days). Do not let the soil dry out to avoid bitterness.
  7. Care: Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid high heat to prevent bolting.
  8. Harvest: Harvest outer leaves as needed, or wait until full heads form (typically 70–80 days). Cut the heads at the base with a sharp knife. Use fresh for the best taste and texture.
