How to Plant Peas from Seeds

Planting Instructions for Pea Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil. Peas thrive in cool weather.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Sow Todd’s Seeds Peas seeds directly outdoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected spring frost.
    • For a fall crop, sow 8–10 weeks before the first expected frost.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.5.
  4. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1–1.5 inches deep.
  5. Spacing: Space seeds 2 inches apart in rows 18–24 inches apart. For trellised varieties, plant on both sides of the support.
  6. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during germination (7–14 days) and through the growing season, especially during flowering and pod set.
  7. Support: Provide a trellis or netting for climbing types. Bush types usually do not need support.
  8. Care: Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Avoid disturbing roots while weeding.
  9. Harvest: Harvest peas when pods are plump and green, before they become tough. Regular picking encourages more production.
