How to Plant Snapdragons from Seeds

Planting Instructions for Snapdragon Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a location with full sun (or partial shade in hot climates) and well-drained, fertile soil.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Indoors: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost.
    • Outdoors: Transplant after the danger of frost has passed, or sow directly in early spring or late fall in mild climates.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost. Ideal pH is 6.2–7.0.
  4. Sowing Depth: Sow Todd’s Seeds Snapdragons seeds on the soil surface and press in lightly. Do not cover, as snapdragon seeds need light to germinate.
  5. Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings 6–12 inches apart, depending on variety.
  6. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (10–21 days). Once established, water regularly but allow the top layer to dry out between waterings.
  7. Care:
    • Pinch back young plants to encourage bushiness.
    • Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering.
    • Mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
  8. Bloom Time: Spring through fall in cooler climates, with potential for winter blooming in mild regions. Snapdragons attract pollinators and are excellent for borders and cut flower arrangements.
