How to Sprout Alfalfa

Sprouting Instructions for Alfalfa Seeds:

  1. Measure: Use 1–2 tablespoons of Todd’s Seeds alfalfa seeds per quart-size jar or sprouting tray.
  2. Soak: Place seeds in the jar or tray and cover with cool water. Soak for 4–6 hours, then drain and rinse thoroughly.
  3. Rinse & Drain: Rinse seeds with cool water 2–3 times daily, draining completely each time. Keep the container tilted to allow excess water to escape and air to circulate.
  4. Airflow & Light: Keep in a well-ventilated area at room temperature, out of direct sunlight until sprouts begin to green.
  5. Greening: Around day 4 or 5, move sprouts to indirect sunlight to allow them to develop chlorophyll and turn green.
  6. Harvest: Sprouts are ready in 5–7 days when they are 1–2 inches long and have green leaves.
  7. Final Rinse: Before eating, give sprouts a final rinse and remove any seed hulls by placing them in a bowl of water — the hulls will float to the top.
  8. Storage: Dry thoroughly before storing. Keep in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
