Planting Instructions for Chive Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Chives can also tolerate partial shade.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Chives seeds outdoors in spring after the last frost, or start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost if needed. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.0.
  4. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
  5. Spacing: Sow seeds 1/2 inch apart in rows spaced 12 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 4–6 inches apart.
  6. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (7–14 days) and while plants are establishing.
  7. Care: Trim plants regularly to encourage new growth. Divide clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigor.
  8. Harvest: Begin harvesting once plants are 6 inches tall. Snip leaves as needed, cutting close to the base. The best flavor comes from young, tender shoots.
