Planting Instructions for Cosmos Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Cosmos thrives in poor to average soil and does not require rich amendments.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Cosmos seeds directly outdoors after the last frost, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost date.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and remove weeds. Avoid adding fertilizer, which can reduce flowering.
  4. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
  5. Spacing: Space seeds or thin seedlings 12–18 inches apart, depending on variety.
  6. Watering: Water lightly after planting. Keep soil slightly moist during germination (7–21 days). Once established, cosmos are drought-tolerant and require minimal watering.
  7. Care: Deadhead regularly to prolong blooming. Taller varieties may need staking in windy areas.
  8. Bloom Time: Early summer to fall. Cosmos attract pollinators and readily self-seed for future seasons.
