Planting Instructions for Dianthus Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Dianthus prefers cooler temperatures and good air circulation.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Indoors: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last frost.
    • Outdoors: Sow Todd’s Seeds Dianthus seeds after the last frost in spring or in fall in mild climates.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost if needed. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.5.
  4. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds on the surface and press lightly into the soil. Light aids germination, so do not cover.
  5. Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 6–12 inches apart, depending on variety.
  6. Watering: Keep soil lightly moist during germination (7–14 days). Once established, water moderately and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  7. Care: Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms. Avoid overhead watering to prevent mildew.
  8. Bloom Time: Late spring to early fall. Dianthus produces fragrant, frilly flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and purple. Great for borders, containers, and cut flowers.
