Planting Instructions for Fava Bean Seeds
- Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil.
- When to Plant:
- Cool Climates: Sow Todd’s Seeds Fava Beans seeds in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.
- Mild/Warm Climates: Sow in fall for a winter crop.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil and enrich with compost or aged manure. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.0.
- Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1–2 inches deep.
- Spacing: Space seeds 4–6 inches apart in rows 18–30 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during germination (7–14 days) and throughout the growing season. Avoid overwatering once pods form.
- Support: Plants may benefit from staking or string supports, especially in windy areas.
- Care: Mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Fava beans fix nitrogen, improving soil health for future crops.
- Harvest: Harvest pods when they are fully formed but still tender, typically 75–90 days after planting. For fresh beans, pick when pods are green and swollen. For dried beans, wait until pods are brown and dry.
