Planting Instructions for Garbanzo Beans (Chickpeas) in Your Garden

  1. Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Garbanzo Beans seeds outdoors in early spring, 1–2 weeks before the last expected frost. Garbanzo beans prefer cooler temperatures early in their growth (optimal range: 50–85°F).
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost if needed. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.0.
  4. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1 to 1.5 inches deep.
  5. Spacing: Space seeds 3–6 inches apart in rows 18–24 inches apart.
  6. Watering: Water gently after planting. Keep soil moderately moist during germination (7–14 days). Once established, water only when the soil is dry; avoid overwatering.
  7. Care: Garbanzo plants are drought-tolerant once established. No need for trellising—plants have a bushy, compact habit. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  8. Harvest:
    • Fresh green chickpeas: Harvest when pods are still green and tender, usually 90–100 days after planting.
    • Dried chickpeas: Leave pods on the plant until they turn brown and dry completely (about 100–120 days). Pull up the plant and hang it in a dry, well-ventilated area to cure. Shell and store in a cool, dry place.
