Planting Instructions for Tree Mallow (Lavatera spp.) Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Tree mallow tolerates poor soils and coastal conditions.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Outdoors: Sow Todd’s Seeds Tree Mallow Seeds directly in spring after the last frost or in early fall in mild climates.
    • Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost.
  3. Seed Prep (Optional): Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours to improve germination.
  4. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and amend with compost if needed. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.5.
  5. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
  6. Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 18–24 inches apart.
  7. Watering: Keep soil lightly moist during germination (10–21 days). Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells—tree mallow is drought-tolerant.
  8. Care:
    • Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage reblooming.
    • Avoid over-fertilizing, which may reduce blooms.
    • Mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
  9. Bloom Time: Summer to early fall. Produces hibiscus-like flowers in shades of pink, purple, or white that attract pollinators and add long-lasting color to borders and cottage gardens.
