Planting Instructions for Beet Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a sunny location with well-drained, loose soil.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Beet seeds outdoors 2–4 weeks before the last expected frost in spring, and again in late summer for a fall crop.
  3. Soil Prep: Work the soil to a depth of 8–10 inches and mix in compost. Remove rocks and clumps to allow roots to develop properly.
  4. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep.
  5. Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart in rows spaced 12–18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 3–4 inches apart when 2–3 inches tall.
  6. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during germination (5–14 days) and root development.
  7. Care: Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Avoid disturbing roots while weeding.
  8. Harvest: Harvest beets when roots are 1–3 inches in diameter. Young beet greens can also be harvested for salads.
