Planting Instructions for Gaillardia (Perennial Blanket Flower) Seeds
- Location: Choose a spot with full sun and well-drained soil. Gaillardia thrives in hot, dry conditions and poor to average soil.
- When to Plant:
- Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Sow Todd’s Seeds Gaillardia, Perennial seeds directly after the last frost in spring or in late summer for the following year’s blooms.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil and remove weeds. Amend with compost if needed. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.5.
- Sowing Depth: Sow seeds on the surface and gently press them into the soil. Do not cover—light aids germination.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 12–18 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep soil lightly moist during germination (10–21 days). Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.
- Care: Deadhead to encourage more blooms. Cut plants back in fall or early spring. Divide every 2–3 years to maintain vigor.
- Bloom Time: Early summer through fall, starting in the second year. Gaillardia perennials attract bees and butterflies and are excellent for borders, rock gardens, and pollinator habitats.
