Planting Instructions for Lentils in Soil

  1. Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained, loose soil. Lentils thrive in cool, dry conditions.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Lentils seeds outdoors in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked and temperatures are consistently above 40°F.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil to a depth of 6–8 inches. Lentils prefer a sandy loam with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. Avoid rich, nitrogen-heavy soil.
  4. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1 inch deep.
  5. Spacing: Space seeds 1 inch apart in rows 12–18 inches apart.
  6. Watering: Water after planting and keep the soil lightly moist during germination (typically 10–14 days). Once established, lentils need minimal water—avoid overwatering.
  7. Care: Lentils are low-maintenance and do not need fertilizer. Light staking may be needed in windy areas as plants reach 12–18 inches tall.
  8. Harvest: Harvest when pods are fully dry and tan, about 80–110 days after planting. Pull up whole plants and dry further if needed before shelling the lentils. Store in a cool, dry place.
