Planting Instructions for Leaf Lettuce Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil. Leaf lettuce thrives in cool weather.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Spring Crop: Sow Todd’s Seeds Lettuce, Leaf seeds outdoors 2–4 weeks before the last frost.
    • Fall Crop: Sow 6–8 weeks before the first expected frost. For continuous harvest, sow successively every 2–3 weeks.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and enrich with compost. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.0.
  4. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep and lightly cover with soil.
  5. Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 4–6 inches apart.
  6. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during germination (7–10 days) and throughout the growing season to prevent bitterness and bolting.
  7. Care: Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid high heat, which causes bolting.
  8. Harvest: Begin harvesting leaves when they are 3–6 inches tall. Pick outer leaves or cut entire plants 1 inch above the soil for regrowth. Use fresh for best flavor and texture.
