Planting Instructions for Lupine Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Outdoors: Sow Todd’s Seeds Lupine seeds in early spring after the last frost or in fall for natural stratification.
    • Indoors: Start seeds 4–6 weeks before the last frost date.
  3. Scarification (Recommended): Nick the seed coat with a file or soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting to improve germination.
  4. Soil Prep: Loosen soil to a depth of 8–10 inches. Mix in compost if needed. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer.
  5. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep.
  6. Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 12–18 inches apart.
  7. Watering: Keep soil moist during germination (14–28 days). Once established, lupines are drought-tolerant and require only occasional watering.
  8. Care: Lupines have deep taproots and do not transplant well once mature. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and prevent excessive reseeding.
  9. Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer. Lupines attract bees and butterflies and are great for borders, wildflower gardens, and pollinator habitats.
