Planting Instructions for Mung Bean Seeds

For Garden Planting

  1. Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Mung Bean seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures are at least 65–70°F.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost if needed. Ideal soil pH is 6.2–7.2.
  4. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1 inch deep.
  5. Spacing: Space seeds 2–4 inches apart in rows 18–24 inches apart.
  6. Watering: Keep soil moist during germination (5–10 days). Once established, water moderately—mung beans are somewhat drought-tolerant.
  7. Care: Mung beans require little maintenance. Avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizer, as they fix their own nitrogen.
  8. Harvest:
    • For green pods: Harvest young pods when they are still tender.
    • For dry beans: Wait until pods turn brown and dry on the plant, usually 90–100 days after planting. Harvest and dry further before shelling.

For Sprouting Indoors

  1. Measure & Rinse: Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup mung beans. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
  2. Soak: Place beans in a jar and cover with water. Soak for 8–12 hours or overnight.
  3. Drain & Rinse: Drain the soaking water, rinse with fresh water, and drain again. Place the jar at an angle to allow water to drain and air to circulate.
  4. Rinse Schedule: Rinse and drain 2–3 times daily.
  5. Location: Keep the jar in a dark, cool area (65–75°F) away from sunlight.
  6. Harvest: Sprouts are ready in 2–5 days when they are 1–2 inches long. Rinse and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
