Planting Instructions for Onion Seeds
- Location: Choose a sunny spot with loose, well-drained, fertile soil. Onions need full sun and consistent moisture.
- When to Plant:
- Indoors: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Transplant or direct sow 2–4 weeks before the last expected frost, depending on your region and day-length variety (short, intermediate, or long-day).
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil 6–8 inches deep. Mix in compost or aged manure. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.0.
- Sowing Depth: Sow Todd’s Seeds Onion seeds 1/4 inch deep.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 4–6 inches apart in rows 12–18 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during bulb formation. Do not allow the soil to dry out.
- Care: Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers later in the season to encourage bulb growth.
- Harvest: Harvest when tops begin to yellow and fall over, typically 100–120 days from sowing. Pull onions, cure in a dry, ventilated area for 2–3 weeks, and store in a cool, dry place.
