Planting Instructions for Parsnip Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a site with full sun and deep, loose, well-drained soil free of rocks and hard clumps.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Parsnips seeds directly outdoors 2–4 weeks before the last expected frost. Parsnips need a long growing season and do best in cool weather.
  3. Soil Prep: Work the soil to a depth of 12–15 inches and mix in compost. Avoid fresh manure or high-nitrogen fertilizer. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.0.
  4. Seed Prep (Optional): Soak seeds in warm water for a few hours before planting to help speed up germination.
  5. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep.
  6. Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 3–6 inches apart once they are a few inches tall.
  7. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (14–28 days) and throughout the growing season.
  8. Care: Mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds. Avoid disturbing roots once plants are established.
  9. Harvest: Harvest when roots are 1–2 inches in diameter, typically 100–120 days after planting. Parsnips are sweetest after a few frosts. Loosen the soil and pull gently.
