Planting Instructions for Parsnip Seeds
- Location: Choose a site with full sun and deep, loose, well-drained soil free of rocks and hard clumps.
- When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Parsnips seeds directly outdoors 2β4 weeks before the last expected frost. Parsnips need a long growing season and do best in cool weather.
- Soil Prep: Work the soil to a depth of 12β15 inches and mix in compost. Avoid fresh manure or high-nitrogen fertilizer. Ideal soil pH is 6.0β7.0.
- Seed Prep (Optional): Soak seeds in warm water for a few hours before planting to help speed up germination.
- Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep.
- Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart in rows 12β18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 3β6 inches apart once they are a few inches tall.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (14β28 days) and throughout the growing season.
- Care: Mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds. Avoid disturbing roots once plants are established.
- Harvest: Harvest when roots are 1β2 inches in diameter, typically 100β120 days after planting. Parsnips are sweetest after a few frosts. Loosen the soil and pull gently.
