Planting Instructions for Red Onion Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a sunny location with loose, well-drained, and fertile soil.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Indoors: Start seeds 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost.
    • Outdoors: Transplant or direct sow 2–4 weeks before the last expected frost. Choose the correct day-length variety for your region (short-day, intermediate, or long-day).
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil to a depth of 6–8 inches. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.0.
  4. Sowing Depth: Sow Todd’s Seeds Red Onion seeds 1/4 inch deep.
  5. Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 4–6 inches apart in rows spaced 12–18 inches apart.
  6. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during bulb development. Avoid waterlogging.
  7. Care: Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Stop watering when tops begin to yellow to help bulbs cure.
  8. Harvest: Harvest when tops fall over and begin to dry, typically 100–120 days after sowing. Pull bulbs and cure in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area for 2–3 weeks. Store in a cool, dry place.
