Planting Instructions for Sunflower Seeds (All Types)

  1. Location: Choose a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily and well-drained soil.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Sunflower Seeds directly outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures are at least 60°F. Sunflowers do not transplant well.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and amend with compost if needed. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.5. Sunflowers tolerate poor to average soil.
  4. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1–1.5 inches deep.
  5. Spacing:
    • Dwarf varieties: Space 6–12 inches apart.
    • Standard/tall varieties: Space 12–24 inches apart in rows 24–36 inches apart.
  6. Watering: Water deeply after planting. Keep soil moist during germination (7–10 days), then water moderately as needed. Avoid overwatering once established.
  7. Support: Tall varieties may need staking, especially in windy areas.
  8. Care: Thin seedlings to proper spacing once a few inches tall. Fertilize lightly if needed, but avoid excess nitrogen (can delay blooming).
  9. Harvest:
    • For blooms: Cut flowers when petals first begin to open.
    • For seeds: Allow heads to fully mature and dry on the plant. Harvest when backs of heads turn yellow-brown and seeds are plump. Dry completely before storage.
