Planting Instructions for Sweet Pea Seeds
- Location: Choose a site with full sun and rich, well-drained soil. In hot climates, provide afternoon shade.
- When to Plant:
- Mild Climates: Sow in fall (6–8 weeks before first frost) for early spring blooms.
- Cold Climates: Sow Todd’s Seeds Sweet Pea Seeds in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.
- Seed Prep (Recommended): Soak seeds in warm water for 6–8 hours or nick the seed coat with a nail file to improve germination.
- Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost or well-rotted manure. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.5.
- Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1 inch deep.
- Spacing: Space seeds 2–3 inches apart in rows or clusters, with rows 12–18 inches apart.
- Support: Provide a trellis, fence, or netting—sweet peas are climbing vines and need support.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during germination (7–15 days) and early growth.
- Care:
- Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Pinch tips when plants are 4–6 inches tall to encourage branching.
- Deadhead regularly to prolong blooming.
- Bloom Time: Late spring through early summer. Sweet peas are highly fragrant and excellent for cutting gardens.
