Planting Instructions for Tidy Tips (Layia platyglossa) Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Tidy Tips tolerate poor, dry soils and thrive in wildflower gardens or borders.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Outdoors: Sow Todd’s Seeds Tidy Tips seeds directly in early spring after the last frost or in fall in mild climates for spring blooms.
    • Indoors: Not typically necessary, as Tidy Tips do best when direct-sown.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and remove weeds. No fertilizer needed—Tidy Tips prefer low-nutrient conditions. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.5.
  4. Sowing Depth: Scatter seeds on the surface and press lightly into the soil. Do not cover—seeds need light to germinate.
  5. Spacing: Thin seedlings to 6–10 inches apart once they are a few inches tall.
  6. Watering: Keep soil lightly moist during germination (7–14 days). Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.
  7. Care: Very low maintenance. Deadhead spent flowers to extend the bloom period or allow them to go to seed for natural reseeding.
  8. Bloom Time: Spring to early summer. Tidy Tips produce cheerful yellow flowers with white-tipped petals, ideal for attracting pollinators and brightening up naturalized areas.
