Planting Instructions for Tomato Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a site with full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Tomatoes need at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost.
    • Outdoors: Transplant after all danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost or aged manure. Ideal pH is 6.0–6.8.
  4. Sowing Depth: Sow Todd’s Seeds Tomato seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix.
  5. Spacing:
    • Indeterminate varieties: Space 24–36 inches apart.
    • Determinate varieties: Space 18–24 inches apart.
    • Rows should be 3–4 feet apart.
  6. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during germination (5–10 days) and growth. Water deeply at the base to avoid wetting foliage.
  7. Support: Use cages, stakes, or trellises to support growing plants and keep fruit off the ground.
  8. Care:
    • Mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
    • Fertilize every 2–4 weeks with a balanced or tomato-specific fertilizer.
    • Prune suckers (side shoots) on indeterminate types to encourage fruit production.
  9. Harvest: Pick tomatoes when they are fully colored and slightly soft to the touch. Frequent harvesting encourages more fruiting.
