Planting Instructions for Turnip Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a sunny site with well-drained, loose soil. Turnips grow best in cool weather.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Spring Crop: Sow seeds 2–4 weeks before the last expected frost.
    • Fall Crop: Sow Todd’s Seeds Turnip Seeds 6–8 weeks before the first expected frost.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil to a depth of 8–12 inches and mix in compost. Avoid fresh manure or high-nitrogen fertilizer. Ideal pH is 6.0–7.0.
  4. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep.
  5. Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch apart in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 3–6 inches apart when they are a few inches tall.
  6. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (7–10 days) and throughout the growing season. Inconsistent watering can lead to woody roots.
  7. Care: Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize lightly if needed once seedlings are established.
  8. Harvest:
    • Roots: Harvest when they are 2–3 inches in diameter—typically 30–60 days after sowing.
    • Greens: Harvest young leaves when 4–6 inches tall. Use fresh or cooked.
