Planting Instructions for Wildflower Seeds (General Mix)

  1. Location: Choose a sunny area (6+ hours of sunlight per day) with well-drained soil. Most wildflowers thrive in open, uncultivated areas.
  2. When to Plant:
    • Cool Climates: Sow Todd’s Seeds Wildflowers Seeds in early spring after the last frost or late fall (for natural stratification).
    • Mild Climates: Fall planting is ideal for spring blooms.
  3. Soil Prep:
    • Remove all existing vegetation and loosen the top 1–2 inches of soil.
    • Rake smooth but do not fertilize—wildflowers prefer low-nutrient soils.
  4. Sowing Depth:
    • Mix seeds with sand (10:1 ratio) for even distribution.
    • Broadcast evenly over the area.
    • Press seeds lightly into the soil using a roller or by walking over the area—do not cover deeply, as many seeds need light to germinate.
  5. Watering:
    • Water immediately after sowing with a gentle spray.
    • Keep soil moist until seedlings are established (usually 2–4 weeks).
    • After establishment, water only during prolonged dry spells.
  6. Spacing: Wildflowers will naturally fill in. No thinning is needed unless plants are overcrowded.
  7. Care:
    • Avoid mowing during the first season until most flowers have bloomed and gone to seed.
    • For annual mixes, mow after seed heads mature to encourage reseeding.
    • For perennial mixes, plants may not bloom fully until the second year.
  8. Bloom Time: Varies by species—typically starts 6–10 weeks after planting for annuals, with full blooms in the second season for perennials.

🌼 Tip: Use regional seed blends for best results, and combine annuals (for first-year color) with perennials (for lasting displays).
