Planting Instructions for Artichoke Seeds:

  1. Start Indoors: Begin with Todd’s Seeds Artichoke seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost. Use seed trays or small pots with seed-starting mix.
  2. Planting Depth: Sow seeds ¼ inch deep. Keep soil moist and warm (70–80°F) for germination.
  3. Light: Provide strong light or grow lights for 14–16 hours a day to encourage healthy growth.
  4. Transplanting Outdoors: Harden off seedlings and transplant when they are 6–8 weeks old and all danger of frost has passed. Choose a location with full sun.
  5. Spacing: Space plants 3–4 feet apart in rows 4–6 feet apart.
  6. Soil: Use well-draining, fertile soil with a pH of 6.5–7.5. Amend with compost or aged manure before planting.
  7. Watering: Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods. Do not let soil dry out completely.
  8. Care: Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks.
  9. Harvesting: Harvest buds while they are still tight and firm, before they begin to open. Use a sharp knife to cut the bud with about 1–2 inches of stem. First harvest is usually in the second year, but some varieties can produce in the first year if started early.
