Planting Instructions for Scarlet Emperor Runner Bean Seeds

  1. Location: Choose a sunny site with well-drained, fertile soil and access to a trellis, fence, or poles for climbing support.
  2. When to Plant: Sow Todd’s Seeds Scarlet Emperor Runner Bean seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures are at least 50–60°F.
  3. Soil Prep: Loosen soil and mix in compost or well-rotted manure. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes foliage over flowers.
  4. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1–1.5 inches deep.
  5. Spacing:
    • Space seeds 4–6 inches apart in rows 2–3 feet apart.
    • If using poles or trellis, plant 4–6 seeds per pole spaced 6 inches apart.
  6. Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and pod development. Avoid waterlogging.
  7. Support: Provide strong vertical supports as vines can grow 8–10 feet or more.
  8. Care: Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pinch growing tips if plants grow too vigorously, or to encourage bushier growth.
  9. Harvest:
    • For fresh eating, harvest pods when young and tender (about 6–8 inches long).
    • For dry beans, allow pods to mature and dry on the vine before harvesting. Regular picking encourages continued production.
